Many members are celebrating milestone anniversaries this month, but none of them are hitting a bigger milestone mark than Frank Grimaldi, a New England Region member who joined the 午夜福利51xxtv鈩� in July 1961. When Mr. Grimaldi joined the 午夜福利51xxtv庐, he will have received his very first issue of the Club鈥檚聽SportsCar magazine, and with it, he saw racing legends in action.
On the cover of the July 1961 issue of SportsCar was Bob Holbert racing a Porsche, taking the inside line from Fred Gamble during the Bridgehampton National. Holbert was no stranger to victory circle, and it was no mystery why Holbert was piloting a Porsche at that race, as Holbert鈥檚 Garage was one of the first Porsche dealers in America. His skills behind the wheel also caught the eye of Carroll Shelby, and Holbert was tapped by Carroll to drive some of Shelby鈥檚 creations.
Fred Gamble, the other racer on the cover of that magazine, has his own motorsports story, racing in the 1960 Italian Grand Prix. Gamble was also a writer, with his work appearing in National Speed Sport News, Road & Track, 午夜福利51xxtv鈥檚 SportsCar magazine, and Denise McCluggage鈥檚 Competition Press. Gamble鈥檚 story is incredible, and similar to Holbert, Gamble also worked for Shelby at one point. After that, Goodyear came calling, and his story expanded to include heading up a program that took numerous international victories, including some at Le Mans.
All of this is to say, that is the story about what was happening in the 午夜福利51xxtv when one particular person joined the Club.
